Fine silver was the first Metal Clay I used and I was so thrilled with the results I obtained I went on to try Bronze Clay and Copper Clay when they were introduced.

Metal Clay is made up of tiny particles of metal suspended in an organic binding material. When fired to the proper temperatures in a kiln or with a torch the binding material burns away leaving pure metal. The clay can be worked with the hands to create a vast array of forms and surfaces which is not obtainable with traditional techniques.

To get started with Metal Clay you should have these few simple tools on hand.
A clean work surface. I use a plastic mat.A clean dish of water.Sculpting tools such as a knife and texture tools.Stainless steel wire brush is good.A small low fire kiln or jewelry torch.A rotary tumbler will polish the metal giving a professional touch.Simple circular and square shapes which are classic for jewelry design.A plastic roller for getting the clay smooth and the desired thickness.A deck of plastic playing cards.

As you can see you don't need a lot of expensive equipment to try your skills with metal clay as you would in traditional methods of working with metals. Working with the clay gives the artist more of a chance to express themselves and be unique in their designs.

Pearl Necklaces - Considerations For Style and Length

Pearl necklaces come in seven different styles. Each achieves a different effect. So, its important to carefully decide which would be the right purchase.

Choker - Generally two or three strands of pearls worn around the neck. The length runs from 14 to 16 inches. This is lovely and one of my favorites for very formal occasions such as weddings.

Princess - This is considered the classic pearl necklace that rests just below the base of the neck. The length can range from 17 to 19 inches in length. This is often the first pearl necklace a teenager or young woman gets/receives. It's very pretty and can be worn for a wide range of occasions. The beads are often graduated.

Bib - There are several strands of pearls which have varying lengths with this necklace.

Collar- This has multiple strands and rides fairly high on the neck. It was very prevalent during Victorian times. May be as short as 12 to 13 inches.

Matinee Length - This is the pearl necklace that is very popular with women executives. It's often worn with suits and dresses, for work or semi-formal occasions. The length ranges from 20 to 24 inches.

Opera Length - This is more typically seen at formal occasions and is over 36 inches long. During formal occasions, the pearls should fall below the chest. During the day or for less formal occasions, the strand can be doubled over.

Rope - This is over 36", but can be knotted and sometimes has more than one clasp which allows shorter strands to be made.

Aromatherapy

The essential oil of choice for treating mouth ulcers is undoubtedly Myrrh. This is not only astringent and healing but also has an anti-fungal property; one of the reasons for mouth ulcers can be fungal infection, for example Candida albicans(the cause of thrush). Myrrh is best used in tincture form; you can make your own in small amounts by dissolving the essential oil in alcohol- use 5 drops in 5 ml(1 tsp) of a spirit such as vodka or brandy. This can be applied neat right on to the ulcers, or use 2.5 ml(1/2 tsp) in a little water as a mouthwash. You can add 1 drop of oil of Fennel to make it taste better, dissolving it thoroughly.

Herbalism

Local treatment is by means of herbal tinctures, to stimulate healing and reduce the inflammation. The strongest, although worst tasting, is Myrrh(Commiphora molmol); others to choose from are Marigold(Calendula officinalis), Sage(Salvia officinalis) and Thyme(Thymus vulgare). Pay attention to general health, and seek professional treatment if the ulcers are persistent or recurring. Cone Flower(Echinacea angustilolia or E. purpurea) may be a useful herb to take; it boosts the immune system and is widely obtainable in tablet form, or a tincture of the fresh plant is also available- take 10 drops in water 3 times a day.

Nutrients most likely to be lacking, and consequently of most benefit in treating the problem, are Vitamin B2, Vitamin C and zinc, and supplements of these may be needed in the short term until the diet can be improved to give sufficient amount- increase green leafy vegetables, fresh fruit, whole grain bread(including the wheatgerm) and for non-vegetarians some meat and fish.

Mouth ulcers most often occur at times of stress or when the immune system is lowered in some way, so it is generally advisable to look at ways of reducing the impact of stress if ulcers are recurring frequently.

For direct local treatment, try applying pure wheatgerm oil, for example by piercing a natural, oil-based Vitamin E capsule, and dabbing a little on to the ulcer. If there are foods, for instance vinegar, that do aggravate the ulcers, obviously leave them out of the diet for a while.
